As others said, I'm generally skeptical of on-site restaurant options, but sometimes you have no choice in the matter. Ate two dinners here during my stay at Palmer Gulch last weekend. Both times I was one of a party of 10 people. The first time, we squeezed around a few combined tables. The second time, the hostess tried to give us multiple separate tables, until we told her what worked the first time. Service was spotty. The first waitress refused to allow an order without the cornbread side. It literally would have meant the bread was not placed on the plate prior to bringing said plate to customer but she didn't seem to understand that. Refills were slow to come, and checks were given the second night without asking if we wanted dessert. The food was...meh. Okay enough, but laregly in the sandwich/burger arena. This isn't where you'll eat if you want gourmet food.

Bland and boring overall. Located next to the Mount Rushmore KOA, it is the only restaurant close by (within walking distance) of the campground. Big tip is that if you want an adult beverage, have you ID ready as they card everyone! I had the Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes and gravy. It was standard diner fare quality, passable but nothing special. The vegetable medley that came with it was straight up frozen goods and was not appetizing. My wife had the Fried Taco, which while a generous portion was super bland. She commented that the ground beef had no seasoning what so ever, just cooked hamburger. Overall, the food was simply lacking and next time I would stay at the campsite and cook.

Terrible experience with restaurant. We are staying at KOA Campgrounds which is awesome. The host said there'd be a wait of about 20 minutes. I saw a four top available and looked at the waiting list with one name on it for 7 people. There was no way that the 7 people could utilize the 4 top. I had to point this out to the kid host. He said that he just sat (2) 8 tops in the same section. So what!!! Then seat us and get your lazy ass over there to help the wait staff. Get water or anything. Do not go to onsite Ponderosa.

Located not to far from Mt Rushmore Monument, they serve a good variety of food items at a reasonable price. I was curious about the fried Beef taco and decided to order it as my other guest also order it. When the waitress brought out the taco platter, I was expecting 2-3 small tacos, but was shocked at the size of this gigantic taco! Plus 2 scoops of Mexican style rice & black beans as well as the condiments. I guess what I had was a South Dakota portion. The beef taco was filled with ground beef, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream-salsa-peppers as condiments added on. I was only able to finish 2/3's of this super size taco.

First of all I would like to say that I have been to alot of place, I am a foodie by heart! This place is so gross, my dear mother came to visit me in rapid city and we took a drive and we stopped here to eat lunch. I could tell from the water they brought me that it was going to be a bad dining experience. They brought out our food and I am going to be honest here, it was basically frozen food you can buy at a store and heat up in a microwave. They brought out this salsa that looked like watered down ketchup. I don't know how places like this stay in business, probably the worst place I have ever eaten.

I don't typically have high expectations of on site dining options at our hotel or resort, but this restaurant was nicer than expected. Cozy log cabin atmosphere. Service was a bit slow, but food was good. Chicken strips were OK. Came with large basket of fries. Grilled chicken sandwich was tender. BLT with jalapeño mayo was pretty good. Only complaint is that kids cheese quesadilla was almost too cheesy and greasy. It also came with a pre-packaged fruit cocktail cup...not fresh fruit. Wanted to order $4.99 apple pie with ice cream for dessert but it took so long for waitress to come back we left without dessert. Gave it three stars for convenience, nice atmosphere and reasonably good food. I would even eat here again during our stay.

Such rude service! I have never asked for my money back before even getting my food but did it here.

We had breakfast. The country fried steak was delicious as were the breakfast potatoes. The pancakes are the thick cake like ones. Our friends raved about the coffee and the service was nice. We loved this KOA and all the amenities it offered.

It's decent for breakfast. There's also a tent outside with all you can eat pancakes for $2.50. Ponderosa is visible from 244; however, there are no signs going south out of Hill City on 16/385. Ponderosa is located in a KOA camping and tourist area, with horses and souvenir shops.
